After serving in the defence force during WWII, he studied art and education at Goldsmiths College, University of London, before returning to South Africa in 1954 to teach at the Pretoria Technical College School of Art. This was followed by nearly twenty years at the University of the Witwatersrand. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was only in his sixties that he became a full-time artist, having mentored many others who went on to achieve international recognition. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of Hodgins&#8217; paintings convey a feeling of deep seriousness and sadness and a sense of confusion that many people experience. Hodgins believed that being an artist is about creating something new and reinventing content within society. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He won many awards, held several solo exhibitions, and participated in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa and abroad.
