Zanele Muholi
Zanele Muholi (1972 - ) is a visual activist and photographer who focuses on race, gender, and sexuality. For over a decade they have documented Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex people’s lives in various townships in South Africa, with a mission of re-writing Black Queer and Trans visual history of South Africa. Zanele was born in Umlazi, Durban and today lives in Johannesburg. They studied Advanced Photography at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg, and in 2009, completed an MFA: Documentary Media at Ryerson University, Toronto. Zanele has won numerous prestigious awards, has exhibited at the 55th Venice Biennale, and the 29th São Paulo Biennale, had solo exhibitions around the world including at the Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Art New York, The Tate Modern, London, and many others. Zanele has several publications to their name and is an Honorary Professor at the University of the Arts /Hochschule für Künste Bremen.
