Steven Cohen

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Steven Cohen (1962 - ) now lives in Lille, France. He is a visual and performance artist who orchestrates interventions in public places, art galleries, and on stage. He also runs workshops around the world that question the body as a scenographic object. His work brings to light that which lies on the margins of society, beginning with his own identity as a gay, Jewish, white, South African man. The staging of his body is influenced by his own story and history and constitutes a means to explore the flaws and grace of humanity. His ultra-sophisticated makeup and eccentric costumes are as elegant as it is surprising. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Cohen has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, America, and South Africa (to mention but a few.) He has also performed extensively around the world at prestigious venues and events such as the National Opera of Bordeaux, Centre Pompidou Paris, Munich Opera Festiva, Bavarian State Opera, and Canadian Stage, Toronto. Steven has participated in residencies at the Baryshnikov Arts Center and Center for Performance Research in New York, and from 2003 – 2008, was an associated artist of the Ballet Atlantique/Régine Chopinot in La Rochelle, France.
