Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Berni Searle (1964 - ) works with photography and the moving image. She often uses herself in her work. She performs for the camera, to produce work that explores self-representation and the relationship between personal and collective identity. This is done in dialogue with the socio-political legacy of South Africa and in relation to the current day realities. Searle graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town in 1995. Her work was featured in the 49th and 51st Venice Biennale; in 2014 she was the Rockefeller Bellagio Creative Arts Fellow, in 2015 she won the Mbokodo Award in the Visual Arts category. Searle has had many international solo and group exhibitions.
