Maurice Mbikayi
Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he graduated with an Art Diploma from the Institut des Beaux Arts, Kinshasa; Maurice Mbikayi (1974 - ) moved to Cape Town in 2004 and today calls this city his home. In 2011 he was selected for the Nando’s Creative Exchange – a programme that recognizes emerging artists with exceptional ability and provides them with professional practice mentorship. This was a turning point in his career - he went on to be awarded residencies in New York, Switzerland, and Ethiopia, where he also exhibited his work. Mbikayi explores the impact technology has on identity, origin, and space. He uses painting, photography, and found objects in his work. He has exhibited widely and was selected as one of the finalists of the Luxembourg Art Prize in 2016. His work is included in significant collections worldwide.
