Hermann Niebuhr
Born in Johannesburg, Hermann Niebuhr (1972 - ) is primarily a painter and works in oil on canvas. He captures a sense of realism in his artworks, which document urban decay and rural landscapes. Niebuhr studied at Rhodes University, Grahamstown South Africa, and graduated with a Bachelor of fine arts in 1993. After completing his studies, he spent six years in relative isolation as he worked in the semi-desert area of the Karoo, where his work was influenced by small towns and arid landscapes. In 2002, he returned to Johannesburg where he began to explore the challenges of living and making art in one of Africa’s largest and most politically complex cities. Niebuhr has exhibited widely, and his work is included in several collections. He currently works between his studios in Fordsburg in Johannesburg, and De Rust in the Klein Karoo.
