Sue Williamson (1941 - ) was born in Lichfield in the UK. South Africa became her home when she immigrated with her family in 1948. She started making work that address social change in the 1970s and by the late 1980s, Williamson was well-known for her series of portraits of women involved in the country’s political struggle. Today, Sue lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, but her artworks have travelled far and wide for international solo exhibitions as far afield as Washington DC, New York, Berlin, Den Haag, Sydney, Istanbul and Venice. Her work features in a number of museum collections, ranging from the Museum of Modern Art New York, Tate Modern London, Pompidou Centre Paris, Hammer Museum Los Angeles, and the Smithsonian in Washington. Williamson has been lauded with awards and fellowships including The Living Legends Award from the South African Government, The Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Creative Arts Fellowship, The Smithsonian’s Visual Artist Research Award Fellowship and the Lucas Artists Residency Fellowship from Montalvo Art Centre in California.
