Patrick Bongoy
Originally from Kinshasa in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, Patrick Bongoy (1980 - ) now lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. He obtained a BA in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Kinshasa in 2009 and also completed a residency in the city in 2012. Bongoy’s inspiration comes from the destruction he has witnessed and the impact violent conflicts have. As such, the figures that he paints are always in silhouettes and often have deformed limbs. Waste materials like inner tubes from tires, industrial packaging, and textiles, together with paint and fabric are used to repurpose what others throw away. This also speaks to environmental pollution. Bongoy has exhibited his artworks in Cape Town, Kinshasa, London, and Brussels. Lucky for us, we can see it right here at Nando’s.
