Colin Payne (1978 - ) lives in Cape Town and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of fine arts in 1999. He makes work about simple things like discovery, vanity, loneliness and joy. His artworks often feature plastic gold, oil paintings paint-by-numbers, and landscape paintings in flat colour. Payne has enjoyed success at solo exhibitions, has participated in many group exhibitions and worked on collaborative projects. He is well known for Popclouds – a series of paintings and prints that started in 2006 and continued until 2013. The intention of this series was to take simple pop-focussed shapes and colours and to push the colours and compositions to create high-impact images. What looks simple, isn’t, as producing even, clean colours and edges is extremely time-consuming. The result is impactful colour – especially at the points where colours meet.
