Nontsikelelo ‘Lolo’ Veleko (1977 - ) studied graphic design in Cape Town, and, after moving to Johannesburg, studied photography at the Market Theatre Photo Workshop. She has risen to prominence in the past decade by virtue of her formal command of color and gesture. Her photographic eye has tracked graffiti artists, street style, and self-fashioned individuals across Johannesburg’s contemporary landscape. Her images are immediately recognizable by their explosive colour and the way her subjects’ confident gazes return to that of the viewer. Veleko was born in the North West Province of South Africa, but these days she lives and works in Nîmes, France.
