Portia Zvavahera
Portia Zvavahera (1985 - ) was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, where she still lives and works. She studied at the BAT Visual Arts Studio under the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and then went on to graduate with a Diploma in Visual Arts from Harare Polytechnic in 2006. Zvavahera has enjoyed residencies in the Congo, India, England, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. As a painter, she draws from a visual vocabulary that includes women, family, and shape-shifting animals and many of her artworks incorporate block-printed elements using oil-based printing ink. Zvavahera featured in the main exhibition of the 59th Venice Biennale and represented Zimbabwe at the 55th Venice Biennale. She has had several other notable exhibitions around the world – the Musée d’art Moderne, Paris; Pérez Art Museum, Miami; Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town and the Minneapolis Institute of Art amongst them.
