Athi-Patra Ruga (1984 - ) was born in Umtata in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. He studied fashion history and design at the Gordon Flack Davison Design Academy in Johannesburg and today uses performance, photography, video, textiles, and printmaking to explore notions of utopia and dystopia, material, and memory. Ruga has had significant South African and international exhibitions – amongst others at the Haywood Gallery in London, the Boston Centre for the Arts, the 55th Venice Biennale, MOMA in San Francisco, and the Tate Modern in London. He’s collaborated with Dior on handbag design and is also the co-founder of Victory of the Word – a fundraising and development project in support of the historic Lovedale Printing Press in Alice, South Africa. His work forms part of private, public, and museum collections in South Africa and abroad and it’s an honour to have some of it in our ‘bag’.
