Robert Hodgins
Born in Dulwich, England, Robert Hodgins (1920 – 2010) immigrated to South Africa in 1938. After serving in the defence force during WWII, he studied art and education at Goldsmiths College, University of London, before returning to South Africa in 1954 to teach at the Pretoria Technical College School of Art. This was followed by nearly twenty years at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was only in his sixties that he became a full-time artist, having mentored many others who went on to achieve international recognition. Some of Hodgins' paintings convey a feeling of deep seriousness and sadness and a sense of confusion that many people experience. Hodgins believed that being an artist is about creating something new and reinventing content within society. He won many awards, held several solo exhibitions, and participated in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa and abroad. His work is included in many notable South African collections.
